Spain Opens Visa-Free Access to More Than 100 Countries, Including 11 African Nations

Spain has expanded visa-free travel access to citizens of more than 100 countries, including several African nations, allowing eligible travellers to enter the European country without applying for a visa before arrival.

The move places countries such as Morocco, South Africa, Senegal, Mauritius, Botswana and Zambia among African beneficiaries enjoying easier access to Spain.

Spain has maintained a broad visa-free entry arrangement covering travellers from several regions across the world, including a number of African countries, as part of its travel and mobility framework within the Schengen Area.

Among the African countries granted visa-free access to Spain are Angola, Botswana, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Lesotho, Morocco, Mauritius, Senegal, South Africa, Eswatini and Zambia.

Citizens of these countries can travel to Spain for short stays without obtaining a traditional visa before departure, subject to meeting entry requirements, including possession of a valid passport, proof of accommodation, financial means and compliance with border regulations.

The visa-free arrangement is expected to enhance tourism, business exchanges, cultural cooperation and people-to-people connections between Spain and beneficiary countries.

Other African countries, including Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Namibia, Seychelles and Zimbabwe, fall under Spain’s visa-on-arrival category for Spanish citizens travelling to those destinations, while countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana’s neighbouring Burkina Faso, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Liberia and Sierra Leone are listed under electronic visa or travel authorisation arrangements for Spanish travellers.

Spain’s visa-free access list includes countries across Europe, Asia, the Americas, the Caribbean and Oceania. African countries represented on the visa-free list remain relatively limited compared with European and Latin American countries due to Schengen visa policies.

The Schengen visa system allows citizens of eligible countries to enter Spain and other Schengen member states for tourism, business, family visits and short-term stays, generally for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

The visa-free access has increased opportunities for African travellers in areas such as education, investment, tourism and diplomatic engagement, while also strengthening Spain’s links with emerging markets.

However, travellers from visa-free countries must still satisfy Spanish border authorities upon arrival and may be required to provide supporting documents before entry is granted.

Spain continues to review its international mobility arrangements, balancing increased global connectivity with border security and migration management.
