PUWU Opposes Government’s Plan to Involve Private Sector in ECG Management

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed strong opposition to the government’s plan to involve the private sector in the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

PUWU has vowed to resist any move toward privatisation, describing the decision as a threat to the interests of workers and public ownership.

In a statement dated January 24, signed by General Secretary Timothy Nyame, PUWU criticised the government for failing to consult the union, despite its role as a key stakeholder in matters concerning ECG.

“While the committee has been established, we want to assure our members of our resolve to resist any attempt by the government to privatise ECG. Members are kindly requested to remain calm while we take the appropriate steps toward achieving our goal,” the statement read.

The union called on its members to remain united and on standby for further directives, underscoring the importance of solidarity in opposing the government’s initiative.

PUWU argued that privatisation could undermine workers’ rights, threaten job security, and jeopardise the affordability and accessibility of electricity for Ghanans.

The union also emphasised that any decisions about ECG’s future must prioritise transparency, fairness, and the interests of workers and the public. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring ECG remains a state-owned entity, contributing to national development.
