Nothing Wrong With President Mahama Changing IGP – Prof Agyeman-Duah

Former United Nations Governance Advisor, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has defended President John Mahama’s decision to replace the Inspector General of Police (IGP), describing it as a routine aspect of governance.

On Friday, March 14, President Mahama relieved Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of his duties and appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as his successor.

Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews on Saturday, Professor Agyeman-Duah asserted that leadership changes, including the appointment of a new IGP, are standard practices in governance and should not be considered controversial.

“I find nothing wrong with the president changing the police IGP, and even the CDS if he decides to do so—it happens,” he stated while discussing Dr. Dampare’s dismissal.

He explained that every president has the prerogative to select top officers who align with their vision and leadership style. “Any president coming into power will naturally want top officers who align with his vision of leadership. You cannot dispute that. Look at what has happened in the US and other countries,” he added.

The reshuffle in the police service has sparked varied reactions, with some officers and members of the public celebrating the transition, while others question the motivations behind the decision.

Despite his support for the change, Professor Agyeman-Duah also advised caution, emphasising the importance of making informed leadership choices to ensure stability within the police service.

“Every president must be very conscious and sensitive when making such moves because, if the wrong decisions are made, they can disrupt the system,” he cautioned.

As Ghana undergoes this leadership transition, his remarks highlight the need for strategic decision-making to maintain institutional integrity and public trust in the security apparatus.
