Nokia Reaches 7,000 Essential Patents for 5G, Paving the Way for 6G

Nokia has reached a significant milestone, declaring that 7,000 of its patent families are now deemed essential for 5G technology.

This announcement highlights the company’s leadership in key areas such as radio protocol design, security, and interface technology, marking a crucial achievement in the telecommunications industry.

According to Nokia, these 7,000 patents are pivotal in defining how smartphones and other connected devices interact with 5G networks. The Finnish technology giant emphasised that every device connected to a mobile network utilises its patented technology.

This achievement is the result of Nokia’s substantial and ongoing investment in cellular research and development (R&D) and standardisation, which has paid dividends over time.

Patrik Hammaren, acting president of Nokia Technologies, celebrated the landmark achievement, noting that the company is now well-positioned for 6G standardisation, which is set to begin later this year. With more than 20,000 patent families in its portfolio, Nokia’s commitment to innovation remains strong, driven by over €150 billion invested in R&D and standardisation since 2000.

Nokia also revealed that its patent portfolio includes a customer base of more than 250 companies using its licenses to access its valuable technologies.

However, the company’s path has not been without challenges. In recent years, Nokia has been involved in protracted legal disputes but has successfully secured patent licensing agreements with major players, including Apple, Samsung, Oppo, and Honour.

This milestone further solidifies Nokia’s role as a dominant player in the evolution of mobile network technologies, as it continues to shape the future of connectivity and digital communications.
