Nearly 200 Telecom Sites Under Construction or Upgrade in Volta – Sam George
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has disclosed that close to 200 telecommunications sites in the Volta Region are being constructed or upgraded by MTN and Telecel to improve network coverage and service quality.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, at the start of his two-day working tour of the region, Sam George said the government was pushing the two operators to address persistent network challenges.
He said the Ministry, through the National Communications Authority (NCA), had directed MTN and Telecel to take action following concerns about poor service in parts of the region.
The minister acknowledged that recent network tests by the NCA showed some improvement, particularly in Ho, where service quality had previously been poor.
However, he said the progress was not enough, and the government expected further improvements to ensure residents across the region enjoyed reliable telecommunications services.
“We believe that the people of the entire Volta Region must get the best quality of service, and so we are pushing for more work to be done,” he stated.
Hon. Sam George said the purpose of the tour was partly to verify reports from the region by visiting communities and facilities to assess the situation on the ground.
As part of the exercise, he is expected to inspect the new Rural Telephony Project site at Akoefe Gadza in Ho Central and an older site at Akoete in the Agortime Ziope area.
The minister’s visit comes amid continued concerns about connectivity in rural communities, where residents depend on reliable mobile networks for communication, business and access to digital services.
He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that network improvements translate into better service for communities across the Volta Region.
