A group of young men, believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), caused a stir at the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly in Koforidua on Wednesday, January 8, by locking the offices of several government agencies, including the National Identification Authority (NIA), National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), National Service Secretariat (NSS), and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
The group later moved on to the regional offices of these institutions, attempting to carry out similar actions. Although no violence was reported, the events left staff members distressed.
The Koforidua Divisional Police Commander, along with a team of armed officers, including the Counter-Terrorism Unit, quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation and restore order.
While the group’s motives remain unclear, sources from Puretvonline.com have suggested that the actions may be reminiscent of similar incidents in 2017, when politically affiliated individuals were targeted during a change in government.
Following the swift police response, calm was restored, and staff members were able to resume their normal duties. Investigations are underway to determine the exact motives behind the disturbance.
