Mystery Fraudster: Suspect Accused of Defrauding 15 Faces Gender Probe in Court

The court has ordered a medical examination to determine the gender of Christabel Suphar Sarkodie Tuffour, a suspect at the centre of a high-stakes fraud case involving over GHC3 million.

Christabel, charged with five counts of defrauding by false pretences, was granted bail set at GHC500,000 with three sureties, one to be justified.

The unusual twist in the case arises from allegations that the suspect posed as both a man and a woman to orchestrate the fraud.

The police revealed that the gender of the accused is key to prosecuting additional cases. After refusing a physical examination, the court directed Christabel to undergo a medical assessment to confirm their gender.

Prosecutors allege that Christabel defrauded 15 individuals seeking visas to Germany and Canada, collecting:

  • £42,889,
  • €8,500,
  • $5,000,
  • GHC230,000.

The victims, primarily young people looking for better opportunities abroad, were lured into the scheme with false promises.

Chief Inspector Ramatu Asumah explained that Christabel, a radiologist, fabricated credentials claiming experience with the German Immigration Service in Frankfurt. Collaborating with an accomplice, Ebenezer, who lacked travel expertise, the duo deceived victims into trusting them.

Christabel reportedly arranged payments via bank transfers and in-person meetings at Osu and the Lancaster Hotel. In one instance, the accused staged a fake marriage at the La Nkwantang District Court, promising it would facilitate a spousal visa for Germany.

Following her arrest, Christabel admitted in a caution statement to transferring the collected funds to Ebenezer, who vehemently denies receiving the money.
