Let Ghanaians know what happened to the Vice President on Friday – NPP

Alfred Thompson, a member of the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, has criticised the government for failing to provide adequate information about Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s health condition after she was flown abroad for medical treatment.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, March 31, 2025, Thompson expressed concerns over the government’s vague communication regarding the vice president’s sudden illness, which led to her hospitalisation at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday, March 29.

“I am just worried about the scanty information given because if you just write that something happened on Friday, Ghanaians need to know what happened on Friday and why she was rushed to the hospital,” Thompson said.

He argued that public officeholders must be transparent about their health since their well-being directly impacts the nation.

“Once you put yourself up for a political office, everything about you is no longer private; that is what we need to get straight,” he emphasised.

Thompson also criticised the government’s decision to seek medical treatment abroad for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, referencing the stance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when in opposition. He recalled how the NDC, including President John Mahama and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, criticised the NPP in 2017 when then Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia sought treatment outside Ghana.

“They came on the premise that they don’t see why government officials should go outside for treatment. Have you forgotten what Okudzeto said? Even President Mahama himself, when in opposition, said they didn’t see the reason for going outside for treatment,” he noted.

The criticisms follow a statement from the presidency on Sunday, March 30, signed by Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The statement confirmed that the vice president had suffered a sudden illness on Friday, March 28, and was treated at the UGMC before being flown abroad on medical advice.

However, the statement provided no details on the nature of her illness, sparking concerns and calls for greater transparency from the government.

Thompson’s remarks echo growing public demand for clarity on the vice president’s health status, as many Ghanaians seek reassurance about her condition and the government’s handling of the situation.
