Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has disclosed that the late Minister for Defence, Dr. Omane Boamah, spent the morning of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash in a virtual meeting with key party officials, mapping out election strategies.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Tanko-Computer recounted that the meeting began around 7:00 am and was conducted online, a format the late minister preferred to maximize efficiency.
“He was the type who wanted to maximize time. Instead of people coming together and sitting around, he would say, ‘Let’s use the social media platforms to do our discussions.’ So most of our meetings in the run-up to the election were held virtually,” he explained.

According to him, Dr. Boamah’s approach to political planning was methodical and deeply strategic.
He noted that the minister had been instrumental in shaping the NDC’s electoral operations since 2023, the year the current leadership team assumed office.
“Dr. Omane was a master planner. From the very first day we were appointed, we met at then-candidate John Mahama’s office. That day, I knew the NPP was in trouble for the 2024 election. He would put pen to paper, map out the strategy, assign tasks, and expect results. We’d return with an A+,” Tanko-Computer said.
On the morning of the crash, the minister’s focus was the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
“Around 7:45 am, Dr. Omane was giving us strategies on how to go about the Akwatia by-election. He gave us all this guidance, detailed and clear. That was how he operated—precise and calculated,” Tanko-Computer revealed.
The meeting ended with plans for the team to report back by evening. However, none of them were aware that Dr. Boamah intended to travel later that day.
“He didn’t tell us he was travelling. None of us knew. We were expecting to hear from him in the evening, but by then, the tragedy had happened,” Tanko-Computer said emotionally.
Dr. Omane Boamah was one of eight people killed when a military helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region amid poor weather conditions.
The crash has prompted President John Mahama to announce the formation of a high-level Investigative Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the incident and recommend safety measures for future operations.
