The immediate past President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr Kwaku Asante-Krobea, has taken a strong swipe at the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, accusing him of mishandling the ongoing nationwide nurses’ strike.
Dr Asante-Krobea described the minister’s tone and actions as “highly disrespectful” and “unhelpful”, claiming they have only aggravated an already dire situation within the health sector.
“The minister owes the nurses an apology—not necessarily for anything they did—but for the kind of treatment they’re receiving. His commentary has been highly insulting. You don’t tell nurses to return for renegotiation in such a dismissive tone. “It’s unfair,” he said during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

The former GRNMA leader did not mince words, accusing the Ministry of Health of “playing games” instead of seriously addressing the legitimate demands of the striking nurses.
“They know the issues. The solutions are right in front of them. Even if you can’t meet all the demands, you meet them halfway. “That’s how leadership works,” he added.
His comments follow a June 10 press conference where Health Minister Akandoh controversially appealed to retired nurses and midwives to volunteer temporarily in hospitals during the strike.
“Given the seriousness of the situation, the government appeals to public-spirited retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services for a brief period pending the resolution of the impasse,” Mr Akandoh stated.
But Dr Asante-Krobea dismissed the appeal as tone-deaf and blame-shifting, asserting that the crisis is not the fault of the nurses but of ministerial inaction.
“If patients are dying, it’s not the nurses killing them. It is the minister’s failure to act swiftly and responsibly. Nurses are only demanding what is due to them. “There is no crime in that,” he said.
He also urged the minister to drop the “regrettable and insulting” posture and return to the negotiating table with pragmatic and respectful solutions.
“The minister doesn’t understand solidarity. You don’t govern by issuing emotional appeals that lack empathy. You sit down, you listen, you negotiate in good faith,” Dr Asante-Krobea stressed.
He concluded by encouraging striking nurses and midwives to remain resolute and urged the government to adopt a more constructive approach in resolving the impasse and avoiding further damage to the already stretched healthcare system.
