Government Allocates GH¢20m Seed Funding to Creative Arts Development Fund — Sukparu
The government has provided GH¢20 million in seed funding for a Creative Arts Development Fund to support Ghana’s creative industry, Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has disclosed.
He said the investment reflected the government’s recognition of the creative sector as an important contributor to job creation, enterprise development, national identity and economic growth.
Speaking at the launch of MTN One TV, a Pan-African video streaming service, Mr Sukparu said government funding alone would not be enough to unlock the industry's full potential.
He called on corporate Ghana, particularly companies operating within the digital ecosystem, to increase investment in local creative production and support the development of a sustainable entertainment industry.
“The government cannot do it alone,” he said, urging telecommunications companies and other private-sector players to complement public investment.
Mr Sukparu identified MTN Ghana as a company with the networks, technology and platforms to contribute meaningfully to the growth of local content production and distribution.
He encouraged the company to explore ways of supporting new productions, creating opportunities for emerging talent and working with government to strengthen mechanisms that finance the creative sector.
The Deputy Minister said Ghana had considerable creative talent, but the industry needed systems that would allow that talent to grow, attract investment and compete internationally.
He also highlighted the importance of affordable connectivity, digital skills development and effective intellectual property protection in building a stronger creative economy.
According to him, the launch of MTN One TV should serve as an opportunity to establish partnerships that ensure Ghanaian content generates economic value for creators and the wider economy.
Mr Sukparu said government would continue to work towards an enabling policy and regulatory environment to support digital innovation and creative enterprise.
He expressed hope that stronger collaboration between government and private companies would help transform Ghana’s cultural and creative assets into sustainable jobs, businesses and economic opportunities.
