Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has described the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives—including two serving ministers of state, a senior national security official, and three Ghana Armed Forces personnel—as a national tragedy that cuts across political lines.
Speaking at a solemn flower-laying ceremony in memory of the victims at the forecourt of the Jubilee House on Friday, August 8, Dr. Bawumia said the loss was deeply personal to the nation and should unite Ghanaians in grief.

“This is a national tragedy,” he said. “This morning I visited three of the deceased families, and I will continue that exercise tomorrow, Saturday, August 9. This is personal to all Ghanaians, and I want to extend my condolences to the government, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the families, and the Ghana Armed Forces, who have lost gallant soldiers.
“It’s a very painful loss. Ghana has lost a tremendous amount from this particular tragedy. This is why I’m here to lay a wreath to express my condolences. This is not a partisan issue; it is a national tragedy, and you should expect full participation because it is our national duty to fully participate,” Dr. Bawumia added.
He was accompanied by several senior figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), underscoring his message of unity and collective mourning.
The crash occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of:
- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and MP for Tamale Central
- Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
The flower-laying ceremony formed part of a series of national mourning activities leading to the state burial set for Friday, August 15, 2025.
Dr. Bawumia’s tribute reflects a growing national sentiment that the tragedy has not only robbed Ghana of experienced leaders and dedicated servicemen but also left a void that will be felt for years to come.
