The People’s National Party (PNP) has extended its appreciation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the 9th Parliament for their dedication and service over the past eight years.
In a statement released by Janet Nabla, National Chairperson of the PNP, the party reflected on the achievements, challenges, and legacy of President Akufo-Addo’s administration following his final State of the Nation Address delivered on January 3, 2025.
“As you conclude your tenure as President, we congratulate you, your party, and the Parliament of Ghana for your commitment to governance and the welfare of Ghanaians,” the statement read.
The PNP lauded the outgoing administration for implementing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, describing it as a transformative initiative that eliminated inequities in secondary education access.
“This initiative, a first of its kind since the inception of our democracy, has undoubtedly marked a milestone in our educational system and deserves commendation,” Nabla stated.
The party also highlighted the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law as a significant step toward gender inclusivity, noting its impact on empowering women in politics and national development.
“This landmark legislation has provided women with greater opportunities to participate in politics and contribute to national development. We celebrate this vision and the efforts of Parliament,” the statement noted.
While acknowledging the administration’s achievements, the PNP also pointed out challenges such as economic hardship, high unemployment, and the rising cost of living, which have deeply affected Ghanaians.
“While these issues were partly attributed to global factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, the PNP recognises the shared responsibility of both the government and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament for their inability to provide alternative solutions,” the statement said.
Looking ahead, the PNP proposed a constitutional amendment to allow former Presidents and Vice Presidents to serve as members of the Council of State, citing their wealth of experience as invaluable to Ghana’s progress.
“Their insights can contribute significantly to the growth and development of our nation,” Nabla suggested.
The PNP concluded by expressing gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his service and urged him to embrace a new role as a unifying figure across political divides.
“As you transition from active politics, we pray for the Lord’s guidance and blessings upon you. We hope you will foster unity and progress for the nation as a father figure to all political parties,” the statement concluded.
The PNP’s remarks underscored a balanced reflection on the outgoing administration’s legacy, blending praise for its achievements with constructive criticism of its challenges while proposing pathways for national unity and progress.
