Fire destroys ECG cables at Tema

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed a New Year’s Eve power outage in parts of Tema, Greater Accra Region, to a fire outbreak that destroyed key power cables in the area.

The fire, reported around 5 p.m. on Tuesday near the Lube Oil Company, caused significant damage to the electrical infrastructure.

As a result, neighbourhoods including Adjetey Ansah, Naval Quarters, Aunty Kate, Leonardo, and Bankuman experienced a temporary loss of electricity.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to determine its origin.

Speaking on the incident, Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, the Public Relations Officer for ECG’s Tema Region, commended the swift response of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which successfully contained the fire and prevented further damage.

“The extent of damage is still being assessed. Until this assessment is done, it will be difficult for us to ascertain the cost associated with the repairs,” Ms. Mensah stated.

ECG assured residents of affected areas that efforts are underway to restore power as quickly as possible. Ms. Mensah added that technical teams are on the ground to evaluate the damage and begin necessary repairs.

The company also apologised for the inconvenience caused and urged residents to remain patient as they work to resolve the issue.
