DStv Sports Package Drops to GH¢250 as Sam George Announces Over 60% Reduction
The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has announced that the cost of the DStv sports package has been reduced to GH¢250, describing the latest adjustment as a significant step towards making premium television content more affordable for Ghanaian households.
Speaking during a media engagement, Sam George said the package, which previously cost about GH¢875, had been reduced through successive engagements with Canal+ and MultiChoice.
He explained that the price had first dropped to about GH¢563 before reaching GH¢250 under the latest arrangement.
According to the minister, the new price represents a reduction of more than 60 per cent for customers who previously paid GH¢875 for the package.
“Any family that was doing 850 or 875 at the time this administration came into office and is going to pay 250 now is going to be saving over 500 cedis,” he said.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George expressed appreciation to Canal+ and MultiChoice for working with the government to develop a pricing arrangement that responds to the concerns of Ghanaian consumers.
He said the engagements, which began in June of the previous year, were driven by the need to ensure that more families could afford access to television content, particularly football and other sports programming.
The minister also highlighted the prices of other packages, noting that a GH¢50 monthly subscription would provide access to 90 channels, while a GH¢100 package would offer more than 120 channels.
He said the GH¢250 package would provide access to sports, news and entertainment content, subject to the package's channel offering.
Sam George argued that the revised prices offered better value for money and could help reduce the incentive for consumers to rely on illegal streaming services.
He said the government was pursuing the price reductions alongside plans to clamp down on piracy, particularly the use of illegal television boxes that provide unauthorised access to premium content.
The minister explained that the objective was to ensure that enforcement against piracy would not leave consumers without affordable options.
“If you're going to make it a high-risk enterprise for people to use pirated boxes, then you must make it a low-entry access for everybody,” he stated.
He added that the government was awaiting an opinion from the Attorney-General’s Department before commencing the full anti-piracy operation.
The NCA and the CSA have reviewed the proposed measures, which the minister said were expected to significantly curb piracy once implemented.
Sam George said the new subscription arrangements represented a clearer reduction in the amount customers would pay, following previous public concerns about whether earlier changes had translated into actual savings for consumers.
