Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has paid a heart-wrenching tribute to his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota, following news of the Liverpool forward’s tragic death in a car accident that also claimed the life of his younger brother.
In a deeply emotional message shared hours after the devastating confirmation, Ronaldo expressed disbelief and sorrow, saying:
“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together with the national team; you had just gotten married to your wife.”
“To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them.”

Jota, 28, and his 26-year-old brother André Silva, a professional footballer with Portuguese second-division side Penafiel, died in a car crash in the early hours of Wednesday, July 2, on the A‑52 motorway in the Zamora province of Spain.
According to Spanish authorities, their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire. Emergency services responded swiftly, but both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The shocking news has sent tremors across the football world, with tributes pouring in from teammates, clubs, fans, and national leaders.
Diogo Jota was widely celebrated for his agility, clinical finishing, and tactical intelligence. After joining Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, he quickly won the hearts of fans with his passion, consistency, and knack for scoring in critical moments.
He made 182 appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 65 goals, and played a vital role in Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title win. His contributions also helped the club lift the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his tenure.
On the international stage, Jota earned 53 caps for Portugal, scoring 15 goals, and played a crucial part in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victory earlier this year.
Just 10 days before the crash, Jota married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso in a private ceremony on June 22. The couple, who shared three young children, had posted joyful wedding photos, basking in what many believed was the start of a new, happy chapter in their lives.
Now, the football community grieves not just the loss of a player, but the devastating collapse of a young family’s future.
Liverpool FC, the Portuguese Football Federation, and clubs across Europe have issued statements of condolence. Flags were flown at half-mast at Anfield and Estádio da Luz, while moments of silence are expected ahead of weekend fixtures in England, Portugal, and Spain.
Ronaldo’s tribute struck a chord with many fans, encapsulating the disbelief of those who had shared the pitch—and life’s most intimate moments—with Jota:
“Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
As investigations into the crash continue, tributes from around the globe serve as a painful reminder of the fragility of life—even for its brightest stars.
