The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Hon. John Ntim Fordjour, has launched a blistering attack on President John Dramani Mahama over his recent remarks on illegal mining, accusing him of endorsing galamsey at the expense of Ghana’s rivers, forests, and public health.
In a post on X, the Assin South MP shared an image of the heavily polluted River Ankobra, blaming the devastation on the President’s insensitivity to the country’s environmental crisis. According to Ntim Fordjour, President Mahama’s assertion that “gold, whether from illegal or legal sources… we must enjoy the benefits rather than foreigners enjoying it” was reckless and amounted to legitimising environmental destruction.
The opposition lawmaker reminded the President of his campaign pledge to declare a state of emergency on illegal gold mining, describing the current situation as a betrayal of that commitment. He accused elements within the governing NDC of scrambling for forests and river bodies to enrich themselves, while ordinary Ghanaians suffer the consequences of poisoned water sources and degraded ecosystems.

“Mr President, fulfil your own promise by declaring a state of emergency. Your cabinet, half of them having forcefully called for a state of emergency barely 11 months ago, must be tasked to act,” Ntim Fordjour charged.
Outlining a three-step plan, he urged the government to immediately:
- Publish daily turbidity levels of all rivers.
- Ban the importation of water.
- Declare a state of emergency on galamsey, consistent with its own earlier commitment.
Ntim Fordjour stressed that it is “unconscionable to destroy our river bodies and forests just to make money for your government and party apparatchiks.” He questioned whether it was worth choosing gold over the lives and wellbeing of Ghanaians.
