Build Creative Ecosystem, Not Just Streaming Platform- Sukparu To MTN

Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has challenged MTN Ghana to use its One TV streaming service as a foundation for a broader creative industry ecosystem that supports production, distribution, investment and sustainable income for Ghanaian creators.

He said the launch of the Pan-African video streaming platform should mark the beginning of a wider commitment to strengthening the commercial prospects of Ghanaian entertainment.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Sukparu said the country had the talent and stories needed to compete in the global creative market but required stronger systems to help local productions reach wider audiences and generate lasting value.

“That is why I challenge MTN Ghana to think beyond today’s launch,” he said. “Do not simply build a platform for Ghanaian content, but help build the ecosystem that makes Ghanaian content commercially sustainable.”

He encouraged the company to invest in local talent, support new productions and ensure that Ghanaian creators were not left behind in the value chain.

Mr Sukparu explained that digital technology had transformed content distribution, allowing films and television programmes to reach international audiences more easily than traditional channels permitted.

However, he warned that global reach did not automatically translate into sustainable revenue, adding that creators needed fair compensation, intellectual property protection and opportunities to develop viable businesses.

He also called for greater private-sector investment to complement the government’s support for the creative industry, including the GH¢20 million in seed funding announced for the Creative Arts Development Fund.

The Deputy Minister identified affordable connectivity, digital skills development, local-language content and responsible use of artificial intelligence as important elements of a competitive digital creative economy.

He said government would continue to support the sector through policies, digital infrastructure investment and stronger protections against piracy and the unauthorised use of creative works.

Mr Sukparu added that the success of the creative industry should be measured by the income earned by creators, jobs created, investment attracted and economic value retained in Ghana.

“When the creative industry grows, Ghana grows. When the digital economy grows, Ghana grows,” he said.

He congratulated MTN Ghana on the launch of One TV and expressed hope that the platform would help Ghanaian creativity reach international audiences while ensuring that local creators received the value they deserved.
