AUDIO: “Stop the Political Gimmickry” — Bosome Freho MP Blasts Government Over Repeated Flood Promises Without Action
Bosome Freho MP and Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee, the Hon. Nana Asafo Adjei Ayeh has launched a strong critique of Ghana’s handling of recurring flood disasters, accusing political actors of turning a national emergency into a cycle of empty promises and “gimmickry” without meaningful action.
Speaking in Parliament during discussions on the recent heavy rains that have caused widespread flooding across parts of the country, the MP said Ghana’s flooding crisis has been repeatedly politicised while concrete solutions continue to lag behind.
He stressed that the country’s leadership is fully aware of the problem but has failed to demonstrate the level of commitment required to resolve it.
“We knew the problems that were confronting Ghana before assuming office. Commitment, political commitment here must be prioritised,” he said.
The MP expressed frustration that Parliament revisits the issue of flooding every year without seeing sustained progress on the ground.
“Every year we come here to talk about flooding. Yes, it is true. But we have not demonstrated any commitment. None,” he added.
Hon. Ayeh also raised concerns about the effectiveness of government financial interventions announced to address flooding and other national emergencies, questioning whether allocated funds are ever fully released and applied.
He cited previous budgetary allocations for flood-related incidents, including the Akosombo spillage and Kpone flooding, arguing that approved funds had not translated into visible action.
“When the Akosombo and Kpone flooding issues happened, allocations were made in the 2025 budget and it didn’t go. The 2026 budget added another allocation, and it didn’t go,” he stated.
He further referenced other sectoral interventions, including cocoa sector support, which he claimed had also suffered delays in implementation despite official directives.
Against this backdrop, he questioned a recent directive by the president for GH¢300 million to support flood relief efforts, expressing doubt about its execution.
“So I am very concerned about another directive that has been made. Whether that one is also going to be another political action,” he said.
The MP urged a decisive shift from political rhetoric to practical implementation, warning that Ghana’s repeated failure to act is deepening the country’s vulnerability to climate and infrastructure-related disasters.
“We must demonstrate and show action, not just talk, not just the gimmicks,” he stressed.
He argued that disaster response in Ghana has too often been reduced to political messaging rather than sustained investment in drainage systems, urban planning enforcement and long-term flood mitigation measures.
“We stop the gimmickry, we stop the settings, we stop the scams, and deal with the issues and deal with the issues well,” he concluded.
