Akufo-Addo Mourns Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, Hails His Legacy of Peace and Unity

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid glowing tribute to the late Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, describing him as a symbol of unity, dignity and cultural revival whose leadership played a pivotal role in consolidating lasting peace in Dagbon.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Majesty Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, praising the late monarch for his immense contribution to peace, reconciliation and the restoration of unity in the Dagbon Kingdom.

In a statement issued following the official announcement by the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, Akufo-Addo described the late Yaa-Naa as "a great figure of unity, strength and the enduring legacy of a proud and dignified people".

He said the late king joins the distinguished lineage of Dagbon rulers who have guided the kingdom's progress for more than three centuries.

Reflecting on the monarch's role in resolving the long-standing Dagbon conflict, the former president noted that Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II was instrumental in bringing lasting peace to the kingdom while serving as the chief of Savelugu (Yoo Naa).

According to Akufo-Addo, the late Yaa-Naa, together with the two younger princes, embraced a reconciliation process that ultimately paved the way for the implementation of a unique solution to the decades-old Dagbon crisis during his presidency.

"He and the two younger princes, with mutual respect and affection, accepted my advice towards the implementation of the special solution to the special circumstances of the Dagbon Kingdom at the time," he stated.

The former president also recalled the honour bestowed upon him in 2019 when the late Yaa-Naa conferred on him the traditional title "Naa Abudani" in recognition of his role in the Dagbon reconciliation process.

Akufo-Addo said he would forever cherish the honour, which was conferred during the first Damba Festival celebrated under the reign of Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II following his enskinment.

He commended the late monarch's reign, describing it as a period marked by renewed dignity, pride, unity and a cultural renaissance across Dagbon.

Akufo-Addo further appealed to the chiefs, kingmakers and elders of Dagbon to preserve the peace achieved under the late Yaa-Naa by ensuring a smooth and peaceful succession process in accordance with the customs and traditions of the kingdom.

He expressed relief that a regent had already been successfully enskinned, urging all Ghanaians to support the people of Dagbon during the mourning period.

The former President, together with his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the chiefs, elders and the people of Dagbon.

"May his soul rest in perfect peace in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again," he prayed.
