Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has raised alarms over the massive loss of water in its distribution system, disclosing that 52 per cent of the water it produces does not reach consumers.
This means that more than half of the treated water is lost due to pipeline leakages, illegal connections, and inefficiencies in the distribution infrastructure. Only 48 per cent of the total supply successfully reaches households, impacting water availability and financial sustainability.
At a forum held in Accra, the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, underscored the severity of the situation.

“As of the end of December 2024, Ghana Water Limited recorded an alarming 52 per cent non-revenue water rate,” he stated. “This means that more than half of the treated and distributed water fails to reach consumers, leading to wastage, financial losses, and inadequate supply for many communities.”
He further elaborated that the primary causes of this loss include leaks in ageing pipelines, illegal water connections, and inefficiencies within the distribution network. “The moment we produce water and dispatch it, only 48 per cent gets to customers,” he reiterated.
GWL is advocating for urgent interventions, including infrastructure modernisation, stricter enforcement of regulations to curb illegal connections, and investments in leak detection technology. Mr Mutawakilu assured the public that addressing the 52 per cent water loss remains a top priority for the company to enhance efficiency and ensure sustainable water management across the country.
