“I Will, More Than Before, Rededicate Myself Fully to the Task Ahead of the Country” – Alban Bagbin Assures Mahama
Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament expresses gratitude to President-elect Mahama and outlines his vision for the 9th Parliament.
Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reiterated his commitment to national service, pledging to rededicate himself to the critical task of steering Ghana’s legislative body into a new phase of governance.
His remarks come following an endorsement by President-elect John Dramani Mahama, who urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership in Parliament to nominate Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The statement from Mahama, issued on January 5, 2025, emphasised Bagbin’s wealth of parliamentary experience and his demonstrated ability to navigate the complexities of legislative leadership. “I believe Speaker Bagbin possesses the experience and insight needed to lead the new Parliament effectively, ensuring it remains a robust institution that upholds democratic values,” Mahama noted.
Responding to the endorsement, Alban Bagbin expressed gratitude to the president-elect, the NDC’s national executives, and the parliamentary leadership for their trust and support. In a statement, Bagbin described his renomination as both an honour and a challenge that demands unwavering dedication.
“I will, more than before, rededicate myself fully to the task ahead of the country,” he affirmed.
Bagbin acknowledged the enormity of his responsibilities as Speaker, describing the role as pivotal to the nation’s democratic development. “This is a profound privilege and an onerous duty, and I am deeply humbled by the confidence reposed in me,” he said.
As one of Ghana’s longest-serving legislators, Bagbin has a storied career in public service, having held numerous roles, including Majority Leader and Minister for Health. His tenure as Speaker of the 8th Parliament has been marked by efforts to promote inclusivity, foster constructive dialogue, and strengthen the institution’s oversight functions.
In his response, Bagbin underscored his unwavering commitment to the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law. “I am determined to ensure that the 9th Parliament operates with transparency, accountability, and integrity while responding effectively to the aspirations of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.
Bagbin outlined his vision for a Parliament that is both innovative and responsive, promising to prioritise institutional reforms aimed at enhancing the legislative process. He emphasised the importance of fostering a collaborative environment within Parliament, ensuring that diverse voices are heard and respected.
“My goal is to strengthen the democratic institutions of our nation, ensuring that Parliament remains a cornerstone of governance and a platform for addressing the needs of our citizens,” he said.
As Ghana prepares for the transition to the 9th Parliament, the current 8th Parliament will be officially dissolved on January 6, 2025. The new Parliament will be inaugurated on January 7, alongside the swearing-in of President-elect John Mahama.
Bagbin expressed his readiness to work closely with the president-elect and other branches of government to ensure a seamless transition and continued progress for the nation.
In concluding his remarks, Bagbin called on all Members of Parliament to join him in building consensus and working together for the betterment of Ghana. “The task ahead requires unity and a shared commitment to advancing the interests of our people. Together, we can achieve great things for our beloved country,” he stated.
