More than 55 million smartphones are now running HarmonyOS, marking a significant milestone in China’s push to build a self-reliant technology ecosystem and reduce dependence on foreign software platforms.
The figure, disclosed by Ke Jixin at a press conference, highlights the rapid adoption of the operating system developed by Huawei Technologies. It also underscores growing confidence in domestic alternatives as China continues to invest heavily in home-grown digital infrastructure.
According to Ke, the progress of local software development has been substantial, with operating systems and databases becoming increasingly refined and user-friendly. He noted that the experience of using domestic software has improved dramatically in recent years, closing the gap with established global platforms.
Launched in 2019, HarmonyOS emerged as Huawei’s response to restrictions imposed by the United States, which limited the company’s access to key American technologies. Built on the open-source OpenHarmony framework, the platform has evolved into a cornerstone of China’s broader strategy for technological independence.
Its rise has been closely linked to Huawei’s resurgence in the smartphone market, enabling the company to rebuild its ecosystem and reduce reliance on Android. At one point, HarmonyOS even overtook iOS in China, reflecting strong domestic support for locally developed solutions.
However, competition remains dynamic. Recent data shows HarmonyOS holding a 16 per cent market share, placing it behind iOS at 22 per cent, while Android continues to dominate the market. Despite this, the milestone of 55 million devices signals sustained momentum and a growing user base.
Beyond operating systems, China is also advancing in artificial intelligence. Ke pointed to globally competitive models such as Qwen by Alibaba Group Holding and HY from Tencent Holdings, as well as the emergence of DeepSeek V4, which is expanding access to advanced AI capabilities.
Looking ahead, China’s technology ministry says it will accelerate the integration of AI into software development and strengthen the open-source ecosystem. With millions of devices already powered by HarmonyOS, the country appears firmly on course to reshape its digital future with home-grown innovation at its core.
