Information Minister urges media owners and managers to invest in AI training at GJA’s 75th Anniversary

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) celebrated its 75th anniversary with a commemorative lecture at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

During the event, Minister of Information, Hon.Fatimatu Abubakar, called on media owners and managers to invest in artificial intelligence (AI) training to keep pace with the rapidly evolving media landscape.

“Media owners and managers are urged to recognize the strategic importance of AI and invest in training their staff to adapt to the rapidly changing media landscape,” Minister Abubakar emphasized in her address.

She highlighted GJA’s pivotal role over the past seven and a half decades in championing press freedom and ensuring that the media remains a powerful voice for the people. The event’s theme, “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism,” paid tribute to the pioneers who recognized the importance of a free and independent press in Ghana’s democracy. The sub-theme focused on the transformative potential of AI in journalism.

Minister Abubakar pointed out that AI is already revolutionizing news production, presentation, and distribution, making it imperative for journalists to acquire the necessary skills to integrate AI responsibly into their work.

She explained that embracing AI would allow journalists to tell more impactful stories, conduct thorough investigations, and connect with their audiences in innovative ways.

However, the Minister also warned of the challenges that come with AI, such as the need to maintain the human touch in storytelling and prevent biases, misinformation, and the erosion of public trust. “Balancing innovation with responsibility is essential to ensuring that AI remains a positive force in journalism,” she added.

Reaffirming the Ministry of Information’s commitment, Minister Abubakar highlighted ongoing support for media organizations like the GJA and initiatives such as the Media Capacity Enhancement Program (MCEP) that equip journalists with skills for responsible journalism. She expressed optimism about the GJA’s future, envisioning even more impactful and fruitful years ahead.

The lecture underscored the importance of responsible AI use in journalism, acknowledging its potential to bring transformative changes while also presenting significant challenges. It called for the preservation of ethical standards, the human element in news stories, and public trust as AI continues to shape the future of journalism.
