OpenAI and SoftBank Group have announced a strategic partnership to develop and market AI systems for enterprises, with SoftBank committing $3 billion annually to integrate OpenAI’s technology across its businesses.
The collaboration, named Cristal Intelligence, aims to securely merge AI systems with individual enterprise data, offering customised AI solutions tailored to each company’s needs.
The initiative marks a major step in advancing enterprise AI adoption in Japan and beyond.

As part of the agreement, the two companies have established a 50:50 joint venture, SB OpenAI Japan, which will focus on marketing Cristal Intelligence to major corporations in Japan.
The venture will serve as a platform for introducing AI-driven enterprise solutions, optimising business processes, and automating operations.
SoftBank also plans to roll out OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise across its affiliated organisations to enhance workplace efficiency.
The partnership grants SoftBank Group companies, including Arm and SoftBank Corp., priority access to OpenAI’s latest AI models in Japan. SoftBank Corp. alone is expected to automate over 100 million workflows through the adoption of Cristal Intelligence, underscoring the vast potential of AI-driven automation.
SoftBank Group chair and CEO Masayoshi Son emphasised that the partnership will not only transform SoftBank’s operations but also “revolutionise the way companies work in Japan and around the globe.”
In addition to the partnership, reports indicate that SoftBank is considering a massive investment of up to $25 billion in OpenAI, further strengthening their collaboration in the AI space.
The announcement follows a recent $100 billion joint venture between SoftBank Group, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, aimed at building Stargate, a next-generation data centre initiative in the US.
With these major investments and partnerships, SoftBank and OpenAI are poised to drive AI-powered innovation across global enterprises, unlocking new efficiencies, automation, and intelligent business solutions.
