AI to Reshape Over 40% of Global Jobs- MTN’s Angela Mensah-Poku
Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to impact more than 40 percent of jobs worldwide, fundamentally reshaping industries and transforming economies, the Chief Enterprise Officer of MTN Group, Angela Mensah-Poku, has cautioned.
Speaking at the 4th Annual CTIO Roundtable Africa at the Labadi Beach Hotel, Mensah-Poku cited estimates from the International Monetary Fund indicating that AI will not necessarily eliminate jobs but will redefine them, requiring businesses and workers to adapt to new realities.
Addressing participants, she described the current AI revolution as the most consequential technological shift since the Industrial Revolution, stressing that its impact will cut across all sectors.
“AI could affect up to 40 per cent of jobs globally, not destroy them, but reshape them,” she noted, adding that the transformation would rewire industries and redefine how economies function.
She also referenced projections that AI could contribute up to $13.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, underscoring its immense economic potential.
Angela Mensah-Poku rejected the notion that Africa would be a passive observer in this transformation, insisting that the continent has a critical role to play.
“Africa is not a footnote in this story. It is a chapter still being written, and we are the ones who will hold the pen,” she said.
She urged African businesses and policymakers to take proactive steps to harness AI for growth and development.
The MTN executive emphasised that AI rewards innovation and adaptability rather than legacy or established positions.
“AI does not respect incumbency. It rewards those bold enough to adapt, experiment, and take control of the opportunity,” she stated.
She further highlighted the importance of placing people at the centre of technological transformation, ensuring that innovation benefits all segments of society.
Angela Mensah-Poku noted that at MTN Business, the focus has shifted from merely providing connectivity to building a digital ecosystem that supports inclusive growth.
“Inclusion is not our charity; it is our strategy,” she said, pointing to the role of digital platforms in supporting both small-scale traders and large enterprises across Africa.
She added that AI should also be deployed to drive sustainability by reducing emissions, improving service delivery, detecting fraud, and expanding access to healthcare.
She challenged participants at the roundtable hosted by MTN Business in partnership with Keynote Africa to take concrete steps toward embracing AI-driven transformation.
“The technology exists. The only question is whether we have the will to deploy it,” she stressed.
Angela Mensah-Poku concluded by urging attendees to engage actively, challenge ideas, and leave the forum with actionable commitments that will shape the future of business in Africa.
