Malik Basintale: Youth Unemployment a National Security Threat

Malik Basintale, the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), has expressed grave concerns over the escalating youth unemployment rate in Ghana, describing it as a critical threat to the nation’s security and stability.

Speaking at a handover ceremony on Monday, January 27, 2025, Basintale outlined his vision for addressing unemployment and creating opportunities for Ghana’s youth.

He emphasised that tackling youth unemployment is not just an administrative responsibility but also a deeply personal mission.

“I have one mandate to achieve, and it is delivering jobs to the unemployed youth. It is very dear to my heart. For many of you who watch me on TV or follow my campaign on social media, I have never appeared without feeling the plights of the many unemployed Ghanaian youth,” Basintale stated.

He further stressed that youth unemployment, if left unchecked, has significant implications for the country’s security and economic stability.

“This is a national security threat. If more people are unemployed, they could pick up arms and go and engage in all manner of things,” he warned.

Basintale highlighted the urgent need for sustainable job creation as a means of addressing the unemployment crisis.

He noted that equipping young people with skills and opportunities is crucial to ensuring they can contribute meaningfully to national development.

“It is incumbent on us to create sustainable jobs for the Ghanaian youth. It is incumbent on us to give them the skills to also create jobs for themselves. If YEA sets up its own institution, it can recruit many people, and there may be indirect jobs in YEA,” he explained.

In addition to job creation, the acting YEA boss vowed to uphold a culture of integrity and commitment among agency staff. He issued a stern warning to employees who might prioritise personal gain over their responsibilities.

“What I don’t like, and I keep saying it, is that if your intention is to make money, then today you better resign and go home. We are not here to look for money. We are here to work and make the President of the country, John Dramani Mahama, proud,” Basintale declared.

Under his leadership, Basintale pledged to focus on sustainable and impactful solutions to the unemployment crisis, emphasising the importance of empowering the youth to become self-reliant and contributors to Ghana’s progress.

The YEA boss concluded by reaffirming his unwavering commitment to addressing unemployment, underscoring the agency’s role as a critical player in fostering economic development and enhancing national security.
