Gov’t Rolls Out 100 New Metro Mass Buses to Boost Public Transport — VP

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has inaugurated 100 newly acquired 29-seater buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) as part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen public transport services and improve mobility across the country.

The acquisition forms part of a larger programme to procure 300 buses aimed at boosting the operational capacity of the Metro Mass Transit system and enhancing the efficiency of transport services nationwide.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony at the MMTL headquarters on Friday, May 22, 2026, the vice president assured the public that safety considerations remain central to the government’s transport agenda. She added that demand data and commuter feedback would inform route planning to ensure improved efficiency and responsiveness.

She further noted that the buses have been designed with a focus on passenger safety, comfort and fuel efficiency, describing these features as essential standards for Ghana’s evolving public transport system.

“This initiative aligns closely with His Excellency’s RESET agenda, which seeks to improve infrastructure, create jobs, and stimulate economic activity and deliver practical solutions to problems. These buses will be deployed to support night operations, shift workers, and late-night economic activity in our urban areas. Safety will be prioritised and routes will be designed around demand data and feedback,” she said.

The vice president urged management of the transport operator to complement the investment with strong operational discipline, including efficient scheduling, professional driving practices and strict maintenance routines.

She emphasised that improving public transport remains central to the government’s efforts to ease commuting challenges, enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth.

“I think we’re all happy about this,” she told the gathering, adding that an efficient transport system is essential for a thriving economy.

“When our transport system is efficient, people, goods and services move as they should. That is why enhancing public transport is central to our economy,” she said.

The commissioning forms part of the government’s response to long-standing transport challenges, particularly in major urban centres where commuters continue to face overcrowding, long waiting times and limited fleet availability.

The first batch of 100 buses arrived in Ghana in April 2026, with the remaining units expected later in the year as part of the full 300-bus procurement programme.

According to the government, the initiative is designed to expand passenger capacity, extend services to underserved areas and provide more reliable and dignified transport options for commuters.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reiterated that a functional transport system is critical to economic development, stressing that the efficient movement of people, goods and services remains a key driver of national productivity.

She added that the ultimate goal is to reduce reliance on unreliable, unsafe and costly transport options while improving overall service delivery in the sector.
