Global Mobile Phone Use Surges Toward 7.5 Billion as Smartphones Dominate Digital Access

The global digital landscape is increasingly being shaped by mobile phone users, with new research projecting that smartphone users will reach 7.52 billion worldwide by early 2026, reinforcing the device’s dominance as the primary gateway to the internet.

Smartphones now account for nearly 90 per cent of all mobile phones globally, with more than 7.2 billion devices already in use as of 2024, highlighting the rapid shift toward mobile-first connectivity.

Near-Universal Mobile Access

The research indicates that mobile phone ownership is approaching universal levels. By 2026, 97 per cent of both men and women globally are expected to own some form of mobile phone, with smartphone ownership standing at 91 per cent for men and 90 per cent for women.

This widespread adoption underscores how mobile devices have become essential tools for communication, business, education and financial services, particularly in emerging markets where smartphones often serve as the primary computing device.

Mobile-First Economy Expands

The surge in smartphone users is accelerating the growth of the global digital economy, powering sectors such as mobile banking, e-commerce, ride-hailing and social media.

For millions of users, especially in developing regions, smartphones are not just communication tools but critical economic enablers, supporting entrepreneurship, digital payments and access to essential services.

Supply Constraints Threaten Growth

Despite strong user growth, the report warns of supply-side challenges. Global smartphone shipments are projected to decline by 12 per cent in 2026, potentially reaching their lowest levels since 2013.

The drop is largely attributed to memory chip shortages, which are affecting production and limiting the availability of new devices in global markets.

Smartphones Outpace PCs

While personal computers remain relevant, their influence continues to decline compared to mobile devices. Global PC shipments are also expected to fall by 12 per cent to about 245 million units in 2026, reflecting rising component costs and shifting consumer preferences.

Even so, hundreds of millions of PCs remain in active use, particularly in workplaces and specialised computing environments.

Connected World Nears 30 Billion Devices

The broader technology ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with the total number of internet-connected devices—including smartphones, tablets, PCs and Internet of Things (IoT) devices—projected to approach 30 billion by 2026.

Smartphones are expected to remain at the centre of this ecosystem, acting as the primary interface through which users interact with connected technologies.

Analysts say the data confirms a clear trend: the world is becoming increasingly mobile-centric, with smartphones leading digital transformation across industries.

As access continues to expand and technology evolves, mobile devices are set to play an even greater role in shaping global connectivity, economic participation and everyday life.
