‘I Was Forced to Be a Star’ – Kweku Flick on Sudden Fame

Ghanaian rapper and songwriter Kweku Flick has revealed that he was unexpectedly pushed into stardom after his breakout song, Money, became a hit while he was still in senior high school.

According to the musician, the song gained widespread popularity at a time when he was writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Assemblies of God Senior High School.

Despite the growing success of the song, Kweku Flick said he initially had little idea about the magnitude of the hit.

“I didn’t know the intensity of the hit, so I used to walk freely on the streets in my Assemblies of God Senior High School uniform because people didn’t know I was the one,” he said.

The rapper recalled hearing his song being played in various communities, including Sofoline, which made him realise the song was gaining traction.

He explained that although the general public did not immediately recognise him as the voice behind the song, people close to him, including his teachers, parents and friends, knew he was responsible for the hit.

“I used to hear my song play in communities like Kumasi Sofoline, and people who are close to me, like my teachers, parents and friends, knew I was the one who sang the song, so I was hyped for the hit, but I was cool,” he stated.

Kweku Flick also revealed that his father hired a driver to transport him to school following the sudden attention that came with the hit song. However, the arrangement did not last long.

“My dad hired a driver to drive me to school, but he was later sacked due to a few challenges,” he said.

He added that one of his friends later offered him a car to use for his daily commute to school because of his growing popularity.

Despite these changes, Kweku Flick said he did not immediately see himself as a celebrity.

“I still did not see myself as a star because I felt they were forcing me to be a star,” he explained.

The musician noted that he was initially reluctant to step fully into the spotlight. Sometimes, he would simply tell people the song belonged to him when he heard it being played on the radio or in public spaces.

However, some listeners believed the song was for Kwesi Arthur, which pushed him to take steps to establish his identity as the true artist behind the track.

Kweku Flick said his music team eventually sat him down and explained the commercial value of the success he had achieved.

“They told me I had become a product that could be used to recoup money, so I had to position myself well before I got to understand this whole music thing,” he revealed.

After reflecting on their advice, he decided to take a more active role in promoting the song by releasing a music video and granting interviews to assert his place in the industry.

The move, he said, helped him reclaim recognition for the hit and marked the beginning of his journey as one of Ghana’s emerging music stars.
