Tom Hale, CEO of wearables company Oura, outlined the potential of smart ring technology to help prevent problems emanating from a global lack of medical professionals.
During his keynote, the executive (pictured) argued the future of wearables are products which look over the long term and comprehend “a wide range of signals to make predictions” rather than the retrospective observations he indicated some other wearables deliver.
Hale noted rings are able to gather better health metrics from fingers than from the back of people’s wrists, where a watch or fitness band would be. The insights could then be used to alert users to issues before they become a major problem.

“If you don’t focus on prevention, whether it’s eating well, sleeping well or…exercising…outcomes become unmanageable,” he said, highlighting a host of conditions which could have been eased or avoided by lifestyle changes.
He also believes the marriage of AI and data from devices could make a real impact across the globe.
‘AI and wearables, I think, are the combination that enables us to really bend the curve. Prevention will change the maths of chronic disease. ”.
“Healthcare requires humanity, but a device or system like Oura can really lighten the load. It can extend the range and availability and access to quality care,” he enthused. “We think human expertise complemented by the technology is the future of health. ”.
