“We Won’t Allow Mining in Bompata” — Residents Warn

Residents of Bompata in the Asante Akim District of the Ashanti Region have declared their unwavering opposition to any form of mining activity in their community, citing concerns over environmental destruction and threats to livelihoods.

At a press conference on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the residents announced that no company or individual would be permitted to engage in gold prospecting or mining within their jurisdiction.

According to them, the decision follows growing alarm over the devastating effects of illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—in other parts of the country.

“Our position is based on the serious environmental, social, and health consequences that mining has caused in other parts of the country. We will not allow mining in our community,” declared Joseph Baah, spokesperson for the residents.

He explained that the people of Bompata are committed to preserving their natural environment for future generations, stressing that mining would only bring destruction and hardship.

“Our specific concern includes, but is not limited to, the destruction of farmlands, vegetation, and forest resources, which threatens our livelihoods,” he added.

The residents urged the government and relevant authorities to respect their decision and ensure that no mining permits are granted for operations in the area.

They further encouraged other communities across the country to take a similar stance against environmentally destructive mining practices in order to protect Ghana’s natural heritage.

“We believe it is our responsibility to safeguard the environment, not just for ourselves, but for the generations that come after us,” Mr Baah emphasised.
