Michael Edem Akafia, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has reaffirmed Ghana’s position as Africa’s largest gold producer, noting that the country recorded a total output of about 4.8 million ounces in 2024.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Thursday, Mr Akafia said Ghana continues to dominate the continent’s gold production while remaining a formidable player globally.
“In terms of performance, if you look at it on the global level, Ghana is still maintaining its place as the biggest gold producer in Africa and sits globally and all of that. So those are the positives you have going for it,” he stated.

Mr Akafia, however, stressed that the impressive headline numbers conceal deeper challenges. He pointed out that small-scale mining accounted for the bulk of the growth, with output jumping from 1.1 million ounces in 2023 to 1.9 million ounces in 2024. In contrast, large-scale mining remained largely flat at 2.9 million ounces.
“If you unpack it and look behind those headlines, you find that there may be challenges and issues of concern for the industry,” he cautioned.
The Chamber President further highlighted anxieties within the mining sector regarding the government’s planned overhaul of mining laws. While acknowledging that Ghana remains a beacon of stability and maturity in Africa’s mining landscape, he warned that policy uncertainty could undermine gains if not carefully managed.
“We believe that Ghana should continue to position itself as a beacon for the mining industry generally, because we are known to be a relatively more mature mining industry,” he added.
