aYo Intermediaries Ghana Limited, the country’s leading microinsurance provider and a subsidiary of MTN Ghana, has constructed a GHS150,000 mechanised borehole for the people of Agona Nkum in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region.
The intervention follows the February cholera outbreak in the region, which left Agona Nkum among the hardest-hit communities. Investigations by aYo revealed that the town’s water supply was highly irregular, forcing residents to rely on a stream contaminated with waste from a nearby dumping site.

To address the urgent need, aYo contracted vendors from Accra to build the borehole, providing a safe and reliable alternative source of potable water.
At the commissioning ceremony, the CEO of aYo Ghana, Francis Gota, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to giving back through corporate social responsibility projects in health, education, and technology.

“The borehole is targeted at preventing waterborne diseases in Agona Nkum while saving women and children from the burden of walking long distances to fetch water. We urge you to maintain it, protect it, and ensure it serves both current and future generations,” he said.
Mr Gota also highlighted aYo’s impact on Ghana’s insurance landscape, noting that the company covers 8.5 million lives and has paid out over GHS36 million in claims over the past seven years. He added that with packages like the Family Cover policy, accessible via *296#, aYo is making affordable insurance widely available.
During the event, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Agona West, Eric Gyamfi Odoom, commended aYo for easing the municipality’s water crisis.

“This project is very timely. The entire municipality is facing water shortages, and streams — our alternative sources — have been polluted by galamsey. Ayo’s support has lifted a huge burden from us,” he said, urging national commitment to fight illegal mining.
Community leaders also expressed gratitude. The Amankrado of Agona Nkum, Nana Mprah Afful, said the borehole was a significant relief but appealed for two more boreholes and a community library.
“We are thankful for this gesture, but we still need additional boreholes and a library. We hope aYo will return to support us again,” he noted.

The project underscores aYo’s mission of not only expanding insurance coverage but also contributing meaningfully to community development in Ghana.
