DVLA Commissions New Office in Akwatia to Enhance Road Safety

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has commissioned a new office at Akyem Boadua in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, a move aimed at improving access to road safety services and easing the burden on drivers in the area.

Speaking at the ceremony, DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey said the project forms part of President John Mahama’s reset agenda, which prioritises decentralisation and accessibility of public services.

He also announced the introduction of a new vehicle registration system, featuring number plates without registration years. According to him, the reform is expected to standardise the system, reduce complications in the resale of vehicles, and improve tracking of vehicles on the roads.

Mr Kotey assured the public that the DVLA remains committed to ensuring drivers are properly licensed and vehicles kept roadworthy to promote safety on Ghana’s roads.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awate described the new office as an important step in bringing government institutions closer to the people. “This initiative is not just about decentralisation; it is about saving lives and making essential services more accessible to ordinary Ghanaians,” she said.

Denkyembour District Chief Executive, Hon. Umar Ahmid Tutu, expressed gratitude to President Mahama for completing the project, calling it a major boost to the district. “This facility will not only ease the stress of travelling long distances for DVLA services but also enhance economic activities in our area,” he noted.

The new office is expected to provide licensing, testing, and vehicle registration services to communities in and around Denkyembour, thereby reducing the pressure on existing DVLA facilities in the Eastern Region.
