A single crystal-embroidered sock once worn by late pop icon Michael Jackson during a 1997 concert in France has sold for €7,688 ($8,822) at an auction in Nimes, France.
The rhinestone-adorned white athletic sock, described by organisers as a “cult object” for Jackson fans, was worn by the “King of Pop” during his HIStory World Tour performance in Nice. It was discovered by a technician near Jackson’s dressing room after the show in July 1997.
Auctioneer Aurore Illy told AFP the sock, which was initially valued between €3,000 and €4,000 ($3,400–$4,500), drew strong interest from collectors. “It really is an exceptional object – even a cult one for Michael Jackson fans,” she said.

Photos posted on the specialist auction website interencheres.com show the decades-old sock now off-white, with rhinestones yellowed by age and visible stains. The item is notably featured in video clips of Jackson performing his signature hit Billie Jean during the tour.
Michael Jackson memorabilia has long attracted high prices. In 2009, a Macau gaming resort paid $350,000 for the glittery glove he wore during his first “moonwalk” in 1983, while a hat he donned just before that performance sold for more than $80,000 in Paris in 2023.
Jackson, who died in 2009 aged 50 from a fatal overdose, remains one of the most celebrated — and controversial — figures in music history, maintaining a devoted global fan base despite longstanding allegations of child molestation, which he and his estate have denied.
