Ghana’s electricity crisis is far from over, as the Institute for Energy Security (IES) has warned that persistent power outages (dumsor) will continue until the end of 2025 unless urgent corrective measures are taken.
Executive Director of the IES, Nana Amoasi VII, has pointed to severe inefficiencies within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), ageing infrastructure, fuel shortages, and crippling debt as the primary causes of the worsening situation.
“Ghana’s power generation capacity is dangerously low, and demand is frequently exceeding supply. The lack of investment in the transmission and distribution networks is a ticking time bomb,” he warned.

The country’s inability to settle a $75 million debt to N-Gas Limited—a key supplier of natural gas—has further crippled electricity generation. Power plants have been forced offline, worsening the already unstable power supply.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has acknowledged the lack of spare capacity in Ghana’s energy sector and urged Ghanaians to remain patient as the government seeks solutions.
“We recognise the frustration. Measures are being taken to stabilize the situation, but it requires time,” he stated.
Despite government assurances, energy experts remain doubtful, warning that without major reforms, transparent governance, and financial restructuring, Ghana will be trapped in another prolonged era of dumsor.
