According to the GRA, Customs officers at the checkpoint had received intelligence regarding a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled into Ghana from Togo. As officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, its occupants abandoned it and fled the scene.
To prevent their escape, the officers fired warning shots. However, a stray bullet reportedly struck a bystander a few meters from the checkpoint.
The injured individual was swiftly transported to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital, where they are responding to treatment, according to the GRA’s statement.
Emphasising its mandate to protect national revenue and secure Ghana’s borders, the GRA assured the public that steps would be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The outcome of the ongoing investigation, the authority stated, will inform future operational improvements and security measures.
The GRA has urged the public to remain calm as the investigation unfolds and reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing customs regulations responsibly and ensuring public safety.
