The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has expressed concern over the low prosecution rate of illegal miners, revealing that only 40 out of over 800 offenders have faced legal consequences.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 19, Mr. Kofi Buah described the situation as unacceptable, stressing the need for stricter enforcement.
“In the last few years, the numbers for prosecution for illegal mining are not very encouraging. Out of over 800, the people who have been prosecuted were less than 40. So we need to look at that area as well,” he stated.

The minister also raised alarms over the destruction of Ghana’s forest reserves due to illegal mining. He disclosed that 44 out of the country’s 288 forest reserves are under severe threat, with over 5,000 hectares of land already devastated.
He further revealed that nine forest reserves have been completely overrun by heavily armed illegal miners, making it impossible for the Forestry Commission to reclaim control due to a lack of adequate weaponry.
The government has pledged to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining, but the minister’s revelations highlight the scale of the challenge and the urgent need for stronger law enforcement measures.
