In a significant development for Ghana’s energy sector, Dr. Yusif Sulemana has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
Sources close to TOR confirm that Dr. Sulemana officially assumed his new role on Monday, February 10, 2025, following a warm welcome by the refinery’s management.
With over two decades of experience in the energy industry, Dr. Sulemana is a distinguished energy management strategist whose expertise spans the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors.

His proficiency in petroleum, power, and alternative energy has been instrumental in optimising refinery processes and enhancing oil and gas production efficiency.
Before taking the helm at TOR, Dr. Sulemana served as a Senior Oil & Gas Production Operations Specialist at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) in the Sultanate of Oman. His extensive career also includes roles such as project manager (gasification) at Genser Energy and chemical/process engineer at Tema Oil Refinery, demonstrating his deep-rooted connection to Ghana’s energy landscape.
Dr. Sulemana’s academic credentials further bolster his leadership capabilities. He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration (Energy Management) from the USA, an MSc in International Oil & Gas Management from the UK, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana.
Beyond his technical acumen, Dr. Sulemana is a passionate advocate for STEM education and mentorship, committed to shaping the next generation of energy professionals. His contributions to the industry have not gone unnoticed, earning him the prestigious Energy Advocate of the Year award at the Ghana Energy Awards.
His appointment comes at a crucial time for TOR, as the refinery seeks to enhance its operational efficiency and contribute significantly to Ghana’s energy security. Industry stakeholders and analysts are optimistic that Dr. Sulemana’s leadership will drive strategic reforms and foster sustainable growth at TOR.
