Government Will Implement Adequate Measures to Address The Persistent Food Shortages- Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the acting spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, has assured that the government will implement adequate measures to address the persistent food shortages under the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

This assurance follows the release of GHS200 million to resolve feeding shortfalls in public secondary schools, a move aimed at stabilising the program after years of supply challenges.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, January 2, Kwakye Ofosu attributed the recent feeding challenges to poor planning and implementation by the previous administration.

“Beyond that, GHS200 million was released about a week ago or a week and a half ago to address the shortfalls in feeding. Again, because of poor planning and poor implementation of the education policy, we had a situation where schools were going to be opened and yet there was no food available to feed the students,” he stated.

He noted that despite requests from school authorities, particularly headmasters, to defer the reopening date due to a lack of food supplies, the previous government refused. As a result, students returned to school without access to sufficient meals.

Upon assuming office, President Mahama immediately took action t o prevent further disruptions.

“So upon taking office, President Mahama took decisive action, and within a few days, he ordered that food be evacuated to the schools.

In addition to that, GHS200 million was released to the various schools through the Ghana Education Service to procure food for the students,” Kwakye Ofosu said.

He assured Ghanaians that the government is putting in place long-term solutions to prevent future shortages, ensuring that students under the Free SHS program have consistent access to adequate meals.

“So for now, that has been done, and going forward, adequate measures will be put in place to ensure that we have enough food to feed the students,” he concluded.

The Free SHS policy, which has faced challenges in recent years, remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s education system. With this latest intervention, the government aims to restore confidence in the program while working towards broader education sector reforms.

Education stakeholders and parents will be keenly watching how the Mahama administration strengthens oversight and delivery mechanisms to prevent a recurrence of food shortages in schools.
