Veteran Nigerian actor Chiwetalu Agu has shared a powerful message urging singles to carefully vet their prospective spouses before making the commitment to marry.
In a trending video on Instagram, Agu cautioned against rushing into marriage due to peer pressure or desperation, emphasising that marriage should not be viewed as a life-or-death decision.
Agu advised those in toxic or abusive relationships to take immediate action for their safety. “Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you have an abusive partner or are in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you are not happy in your marriage, seek help or run for your life,” he stated.
The actor further warned against staying in harmful marriages for the sake of children or financial security, highlighting the tragic consequences of such decisions.
He referenced a case where a woman was tragically killed by her husband, questioning who would care for the children left behind.
“Divorce is better than rest in peace. I want to stay because of my children or because he is rich. That was how a lady was burnt to death by her husband. Now, who will take care of the kids?” he said.
Agu also stressed the importance of conducting thorough background checks before marrying someone. He cautioned against being swept up in impulsive decisions based on physical attraction or societal expectations.
“Always remember to do a background check before proceeding to marry someone. She is beautiful or he is handsome; I want to marry him or her by all means, see you, see death,” he warned.
In closing, Agu prayed that people would make wise decisions, free from the pressure of societal norms, to avoid costly mistakes in the name of marriage. “I pray we don’t make mistakes that will cost us our lives in the name of marriage,” he concluded.
