Speaker Sets Up 7-Member Committee to Investigate Vetting Chaos

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has initiated an inquiry into the violent disturbances that broke out during the vetting process on Thursday, January 30, 2025. A seven-member committee has been established to probe the incident and recommend disciplinary measures.

Announcing the formation of the committee on the floor of Parliament on Friday, January 31, 2025, Bagbin emphasised that any member found responsible for the disorder would face appropriate sanctions.

The committee will be led by Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah and includes Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui, Abena Osei Asare, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, and Bede Anwataazuma Ziedeng.

Bagbin declared that MPs found culpable for the damages would bear the full cost of repairs, with potential salary deductions to cover the expenses. He also imposed a two-week suspension on four MPs—Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib—due to their involvement in the disturbances.

Describing the incident as “disgraceful and deeply regrettable,” Bagbin stressed that it tarnishes the reputation of Parliament.

He firmly asserted that parliamentary privileges do not extend to acts of lawlessness, urging MPs to uphold decorum and respect during proceedings.

The chaos erupted during a session of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, where lawmakers were set to vet Health Minister-designate Kwabena Akandoh and Foreign Affairs Minister-designate Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The altercation stemmed from a dispute between minority and majority members regarding the timing of the vetting process, culminating in physical confrontations and property damage.

Opposition MPs had demanded that the vetting be rescheduled to Friday, January 31, arguing that the timing was inconvenient. However, tensions escalated when the majority insisted on proceeding as planned, leading to clashes and disruptions.

Bagbin expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the disorder, noting that such incidents undermine the credibility of Parliament. He urged members to uphold democratic values and maintain the dignity of legislative proceedings.

The seven-member committee is expected to conduct a thorough investigation and submit its findings, which will guide any further actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
