NLA Gets New Acting Director

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has a new acting director-general following the appointment of Mohammed Abdul-Salam. Effective January 15, 2025, Abdul-Salam takes on the role with a mandate to steer the Authority’s operations and provide strategic leadership.

A statement from the Office of the President confirmed the appointment, stating:

“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, has, in accordance with Article IPS (1) of the Constitution and section 45(1) of the National Lotto Act, 2006 (Act 7), appointed you as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority pending receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the Board of the Authority, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.”

The newly appointed Acting Director-General previously served as the regional secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region. His extensive experience in organisational leadership and governance is expected to guide his tenure at the NLA.

The appointment follows the resignation of Sammy Awuku, who had served as Director-General of the NLA since August 2021.

Awuku stepped down from the role on January 13, 2025, citing his election as the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North as the primary reason for his decision.

In his resignation letter to President Mahama, he expressed a desire to fully dedicate himself to his parliamentary responsibilities.

“In the light of this new responsibility, I wish to focus my efforts on serving as a Member of Parliament,” Awuku wrote. He also requested the swift appointment of a successor to ensure a smooth transition and proper handover of responsibilities.
