The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the immediate suspension of operations by more than 60 FM radio stations across Ghana, citing widespread violations of licensing and operational regulations.
Prominent stations including Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM have been affected in what the NCA describes as an enforcement exercise aimed at ensuring compliance with the Electronic Communications Act and its accompanying regulatory framework.
According to a statement released on Monday, the crackdown follows a recent audit—sanctioned by a ministerial directive—that uncovered numerous infractions among broadcasting outlets.

“This directive is necessary to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s broadcasting space. “All affected stations have failed to meet one or more key licensing and operational requirements,” the NCA stated.
Breakdown of Infractions
Out of the 62 affected radio stations:
- 28 are operating with expired authorisations.
- 14 received authorisation but failed to commence operations within two years, violating setup timelines.
- 13 are broadcasting under provisional authorisation, though they have paid the required licence fees.
- 7 have paid for provisional licences but have not met final authorisation conditions under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations.
Checks by Citi News confirmed that Asaase Radio (99.5 FM) is currently off air following the enforcement directive.
The NCA emphasised that its regulatory actions are designed to safeguard public interest and restore order in Ghana’s media environment.
“All broadcasters must comply fully with licensing obligations to remain operational,” the authority warned, adding that monitoring and enforcement efforts will be intensified nationwide.
The development has stirred concern among media stakeholders, especially given the stature of some of the affected outlets. Wontumi FM, for instance, is closely associated with the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
