We’re Ready for Ablekuma North Rerun – NDC Declares

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is fully prepared to return to the polls in Ablekuma North, following the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations on July 11, 2025.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News shortly after the EC’s announcement, NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande threw his party’s full support behind its parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, expressing confidence in her ability to secure victory at the rerun.

“The NDC believes that our candidate Ewurabena Aubynn is capable, competent, and well fit for that purpose,” Gbande stated.
“On December 7, the people of Ablekuma North, based on voting patterns, contemplated making her their MP — as opposed to an individual who is only good at twerking on campaign platforms and has been alleged in visa racketeering.”

Gbande launched a scathing attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of trying to manipulate the election process and “impose” an unpopular candidate on the people of Ablekuma North.

“You can’t impose that candidate on a constituency,” Gbande said. “Every single step advanced by the NPP after December 7… is an indication that they want to illegally impose on the people of Ablekuma North.”

He alleged that the NPP, with tacit support from elements within the EC, had sought to “steal” the parliamentary seat by relying on scanned pink sheets that lacked the required presiding officer verification—a claim that formed the basis for the rerun decision.

“Ablekuma North is one of the seats the NPP sought to use the EC to steal from the NDC. We’re simply going back to do what the law requires us to do,” Gbande said.

The Electoral Commission, in a statement issued July 2, explained that although scanned pink sheets from the 19 polling stations had been approved by party agents, the forms had not been verified by the presiding officers, violating electoral protocols.

As a result, the EC resolved—after months of political deadlock—to rerun the vote in the 19 polling stations to restore electoral integrity and finalise the outcome of the December 7, 2024 parliamentary election.

The rerun is expected to finally determine the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat, which has been in limbo for over seven months due to the controversy.

Using an educational analogy, Gbande welcomed the rerun, saying the NDC is not afraid to face voters again.

“If you’re a competent student and the examiner cancels your results, you shouldn’t be afraid to go back and rewrite,” he said.
“The NDC will return to the people of Ablekuma North, plead with them in one accord, and seek their mandate again. We believe that in those 19 polling stations, they will vote to make up the difference.”

The Ablekuma North rerun is shaping up to be a high-stakes showdown between the NDC and NPP, as both parties seek to tilt the final composition of Ghana’s 276-seat Parliament.

The EC has assured the public of a transparent and peaceful process, with security support from the Ghana Police Service.
