The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has appointed its Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, as Interim Vice-Chancellor, following a directive from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
The decision was reached at an emergency meeting of the University’s Governing Council on 24th September 2025. In a notice signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, the University confirmed it was complying fully with GTEC’s instructions on the leadership transition.
“Accordingly, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto is to act in the interim,” the statement read.

The leadership change follows GTEC’s directive to former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to vacate his post after reaching the constitutional retirement age of 60.
In a letter dated 19th September 2025, GTEC said Prof. Boampong’s continued stay in office violated Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires public officers to retire at age 60 unless otherwise provided by law.
The Commission also cited the University of Cape Coast Act (PNDCL 278) and the University’s statutes, which both reinforce the constitutional retirement provision and define the limits of the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure.
Although the matter is currently before the Cape Coast High Court, GTEC has directed that no substantive appointment be made until the case is resolved.
Meanwhile, UCC’s Governing Council has assured the University community and stakeholders that academic and administrative operations remain stable and uninterrupted.
Prof. Aheto will serve as acting head of the institution until further notice.
