Trader Granted GH¢30,000 Bail for Setting Ex-Lover’s Property Ablaze
A 36-year-old trader, Ruth Arthur, also known as Amina, has been granted bail of GH¢30,000 with two sureties by the Enchi District Magistrate Court after allegedly setting her ex-lover’s belongings on fire.
Ruth, who pleaded guilty with explanation to charges of unlawful entry, causing damage, and stealing, had her bail granted after the court, presided over by Mr Lawrence Buanor-Buer, reconsidered her explanation.
According to the prosecution led by General Sergeant Stephen Offei Asante, the complainant, David Anni, alias Nana Atopah, is an Okada rider residing in Amonie in the Aowin municipality. He and Ruth had been in a relationship for two years until a tragic incident—the death of their two-month-old child—led Ruth’s family to oppose the relationship, resulting in a separation.

On March 3, 2025, while David attended a brother’s wedding at Nyameah, he received a distress call from his friend Akwasi, who informed him that Ruth had broken into his room and set his belongings on fire.
David rushed back to discover his room ransacked, with GH¢22,000 in cash missing. Ruth was accused of destroying items including a 32-inch Hisense flat-screen TV, a Binatone standing fan, Sony speakers, a master decoder, and a double-bed mattress. Kitchen items, a container drum, and other valuables were also damaged, with the total cost of destruction amounting to GH¢27,019.
Police visited the crime scene, confirming the damages and finding partially burnt personal effects. Ruth admitted to the offence in her caution statement.
The case continues as the court assesses the evidence presented.
