Three NDC Aspirants File to Contest Akwatia By-Election; NPP Settles on Mining CEO

Three aspirants have officially picked up nomination forms to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Akwatia constituency, ahead of a by-election necessitated by the recent passing of the sitting Member of Parliament.

The contenders are

  • Henry Boakye, a former MP for Akwatia;
  • Bernard Bediako Baidoo, the current NDC Constituency Secretary; and
  • Erasmus Koney Ali, a local party member making his first attempt at the seat.

In line with the party’s internal processes, the nomination window will close on Wednesday, July 30, after which all aspirants will undergo vetting on Thursday, July 31. Balloting to determine the order on the ballot paper will be conducted immediately following the vetting process. The primaries are scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025.

The NDC’s candidate selection has attracted attention due to the strategic importance of the Akwatia seat, which the party is keen to reclaim and retain following the loss of the incumbent MP.

Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has settled on Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the Chief Executive Officer of Owuo Mining Company, as its candidate for the impending by-election. Party sources say the choice followed extensive consultations with constituency leaders, traditional authorities, and grassroots members.

According to Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu, the party opted for a consensus candidate to avoid internal divisions and accelerate campaign preparations. He added that proposals to open the race for a primary were “overwhelmingly rejected.”

Reacting to rumors that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, widow of the late MP, might be chosen as the party’s candidate, Mr. Konadu dismissed the claims as “false and misleading,” urging the public to disregard the speculation.

The Electoral Commission is expected to announce the official date for the by-election in the coming days, after formally receiving notification of the vacant seat from Parliament. Both the NDC and NPP are intensifying preparations to secure a decisive victory in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
