Tension has gripped the Basyonde community in the Tempane District of the Upper East Region following an alleged invasion by armed military personnel on Monday morning, November 3, 2025, hours after two Immigration Service officers were shot by unknown gunmen at Nagani, a nearby community.
One of the officers reportedly died from gunshot wounds, while the other remains in critical condition at a health facility.
According to the Assembly Member for Basyonde, Haruna Asaana Musah, the soldiers, believed to have come from Bawku, entered the town around 11 a.m. under the guise of conducting a “special search” related to the earlier attack on the immigration officers.

However, what was expected to be an intelligence-led operation quickly descended into chaos.
“Before they even entered the town properly, they started beating women and whoever they met on the way,” Mr Musah told Graphic Online.
He alleged that the soldiers assaulted several residents, including his 65-year-old father and uncle, without provocation.
“My dad said they were sitting by their shop when the soldiers parked an armoured vehicle nearby, ran toward them, kicked him down, and started beating him. They also attacked another businessman entering the community,” he recounted.
Mr Musah said while his father sustained bruises and refused hospital treatment, other injured residents were taken to the Basyonde Health Centre for medical care.
“So far, five people are confirmed injured. Two are currently in hospital, and others are recovering at home. The number could be higher because some victims ran away without reporting to the hospital,” he added, noting that Monday was the community’s market day, drawing visitors from nearby areas.
Local authorities, including the District Chief Executive, Joseph Mbilla, reportedly intervened to restore order and directed the soldiers to proceed to Nagani, about 10 kilometres away, where the shooting of the immigration officers occurred.
“Calm has been restored, and officials have visited the victims at the hospital. But residents remain fearful the soldiers may return,” Mr Musah said.
Meanwhile, the Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed that a manhunt is underway for the unknown assailants responsible for the shooting of the immigration officers.
A statement signed by the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Abdul Rahman Sumaila, assured the public that the police are collaborating with other security agencies to track down the perpetrators and restore safety to the area.
